“Angelica Slave” Sculpture, statue that recreates the figure of Princess Angélica, who is depicted bound to be devoured by a sea monster. Angélica is a character from the 16th-century epic poem “Orlando Furioso” by Ariosto.

“Orlando Furioso” is a 16th-century epic poem written by the Italian poet Ludovico Ariosto (1474-1533), with the first version appearing in 1516 and the final edition published in 1532. The work is based on the medieval French chanson de geste “The Song of Roland,” which narrates the legendary deeds of Roland, one of the knights of King Charlemagne (c.748-814) who participated in the Battle of Roncesvalles.

Ariosto’s work, belonging to the genre of chivalric romance, revolves around the character of Roland or Orlando and blends realism with fantasy, including wizards and witches, magical objects, and fantastic creatures such as a hippogriff (a winged horse with an eagle’s head) or a sea monster. The central theme is Orlando’s unrequited love for Princess Angélica within the framework of the war between Christians and Muslims. In one of the episodes, Orlando rescues Angélica, who is held captive by barbarians, and she is tied to a rock to be devoured by a sea monster called Orca.

Sculptures like this statue of Angélica Slave, inspired by Ariosto’s chivalric poem, become prominent pieces of home decor, both indoors in spaces like the living room, libraries, and offices, and outdoors in gardens and patios, transforming these spaces into special and inspiring corners.
