Reproduction of a medieval bas-relief allegory of alchemy, the original is on the façade of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. On the central column between the doors of the cathedral is a medallion with a woman and a ladder with nine steps leaning on it, holding a book in one hand and a sceptre in the other. This image symbolises the Scala Philosophorum, the Philosopher’s Ladder, the nine stages of alchemical work leading to the Philosopher’s Stone, transmutation.
