The Allegory of Winter is a marble sculpture created by the sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon in 1783. The original is 145 cm tall and is located in the Faber Museum in Montpellier. The marble figure refers to a series of models of allegorical representations of summer and winter. Unlike Baroque allegories of winter in the form of an old man or a woman warming by the fire, Houdon chose the figure of a young woman. She has wrapped a cloth around her head and upper body, while her abdomen and legs are bare. The closed leg posture harks back to the ancient motif of the ‘Modest Venus,’ but the nudity of part of the body is a consistent element of the allegory of winter. Finally, Houdon used these starting points as a justification for creating a sensual and suggestive sculpture, which soon gained great popularity.
Reproductions of sculptures made from materials such as molded marble with resins are versatile elements that create a unique and stimulating atmosphere in the home. Through them, we express our personality, tastes, interests, and aesthetic preferences.
