Alexander the Great (356 BC – 323 BC) was appointed king of Macedonia in 336 BC, succeeding his father. The son of Philip II of Macedonia and Olympias of Epirus, Alexander was groomed by his parents to reign, receiving a meticulous education under the philosopher Aristotle. Alexander spent the early years of his reign asserting his authority over the peoples subjected to Macedonia, who had rebelled following the death of Philip. After stabilizing control over Greece, he swiftly led his army against the powerful and extensive Persian Empire, expanding his empire to the borders of India.
