The bas-relief reproduces a scene of Venus and Mars (Ares and Aphrodite). The artistic movement that developed during the second half of the 18th century was called neoclassicism for trying to recover the patterns and tastes of Greek and Roman antiquity. The classical world was considered a model of rationality and proportion and its artistic themes were fundamentally drawn from Greco-Roman mythology.
