This sculpture is inspired by the work of the Polish painter Tamara Lempicka (1898 – 1980). Influenced by Cubism and Art Deco of the 1920s, Tamara de Lempicka achieved great fame in France and the United States. She is characterised by her human figures with sculptural volumes and a tendency towards geometrisation.
Adam and Eve, the first two human beings according to the book of Genesis, have inspired numerous works of art from the Middle Ages to the present day. According to the Bible, God created Adam in His own image from the dust, and later, He created Eve, the first woman, from one of Adam’s ribs. Together, they dwelled in the Garden of Eden, the earthly paradise, until they disobeyed God’s prohibition to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Their fall resulted in their expulsion from Eden, and as a consequence, the appearance of suffering and labor in the world. The story of Adam and Eve has been an endless source of artistic inspiration throughout the centuries.
Tamara de Lempicka‘s work is a notable example of the artistic representation of this biblical story in 20th-century art. Lempicka created this piece in 1932. Her distinctive art deco style fuses elegance and modernity, and is reflected in the portrayal of the first couple, who appear as stylized figures in a geometric environment. Lempicka succeeds in conveying both the sensuality and tension of the temptation story in this work, considered one of the most iconic pieces of her career, a unique and modern interpretation of a classic theme that continues to captivate art lovers to this day.
