John William Godward was one of the leading followers of Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema. Godward devoted his entire life to painting young women dressed in fabrics evocative of Greek or Roman costumes, almost always posing on marble terraces. He can be considered one of the last painters of Victorian Neoclassicism.
